Psyllium is a member of the plant family Plantaginaceae. Psyllium is a seed used for
medicinal purposes taken from the common fleawort, Plantago psyllium. Psyllium stalks contain
tiny seeds, also called Psyllium, covered by husks, which are the parts used in foods. There are
several species of psyllium, but the seed husks from Plantago ovata, also known as blonde
psyllium, have the best quality and highest fiber content. Psyllium is an excellent fiber because it
acts like a sponge helping to clean the intestines.
