Mount Wellington

Mount Wellington

Hobart Water as rains sweeps across Tasmania from the west or south, it falls on the mountain which forms a natural, high barrier. Water cascades down a number of rivers and creeks and is collected by Hobart Water at several off-take points. Here, nature and gravity helps supply around 20 per cent of Hobart's drinking water. Hobart Water collected from Mount Wellington is so pure it requires only chlorination and fluoridation, before it is piped directly to households by local councils. Due to area's standing amongst visitors and locals, drinking water catchments are identified by special symbols on Wellington Park signs located throughout the Mountain. More information on the Mount Wellington Catchments and what Hobart Water does to protect it can be found within our environment page. Hobart Water works closely with local stakeholders and Mount Wellington Park Management Trust to ensure the mountain and its natural catchments are protected for future generations. Hobart Water also co-sponsors a part-time ranger to work on the mountain to ensure visitors are provided with information and comply with any restrictions that are in place. Hobart Water looks beyond water collection on the mountain as work is done with numerous partners and community groups; sponsorship of numerous events which celebrate the mountain.
